PERSONAL PROJECT

When I was little my mum used to grow flowers in her garden – peonies, lilly-of-the-valley, roses, daffodils and phlox. My friends and I used to play with petals, sticking them to our nails, pretending we had our manicure done :-) Whenever I come across these blooms, their scent always brings back happy childhood memories. I’m one of those people who will always stop and smell the flowers. Nothing else but a deep inhale to fill the lungs will do.

My interest in flowers increased massively since I started photographing weddings 4 years ago. My brides’ faces just lit up when they saw their bouquets being delivered into the room. I love photographing the bouquets and other floral arrangements on the day. The beauty and emotion flowers bring is absolutely wonderful.

This year I’ve decided to start a personal project to learn more about flowers and to try my hand at arranging them. The image below is my first attempt! I just went to the local flower stall and picked what I thought would go together and what I liked the look of. It was just an experiment to see whether I could actually do anything relying on my gut feeling. I didn’t have a recipe. I just threw it all together the way I thought looked pretty. I loved every minute of it – picking the flowers, strangers smiling at me on the bus seeing the bunch I was carrying, spreading the stems on the table, turning the music up and dancing around whilst putting it all together. It’s so therapeutic

I will definitely be doing more of this! I don’t know how often yet, as the wedding season is coming up, but I will try my best. I want to find inspiration behind every flower arrangement I put together, and I will try and share the results here on my blog or on my Instagram. Exciting times!
